Aromatase (CYP19) Assay
The Aromatase (CYP19) Assay serves as an in vitro screening assay to help identify chemicals or mixtures that have the potential to interact with the endocrine system. CYP19 (Aromatase) is the key cytochrome P450 responsible for the conversion of C19 androgens (e.g. testosterone) to C18 estrogenic steroids, and can also metabolizes xenobiotics. Aromatase inhibitors have been identified as potential environmental toxins.
This assay is part of the OECD framework for the Testing and Assessment of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals” under the EPA.
