The Hershberger Bioassay
The Hershberger Bioassay serves as an in vivo screening assay to evaluate the ability of a chemical to elicit biological activities consistent with androgen agonists or antagonists. This assay is part of the OECD framework for the Testing and Assessment of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals” under the EPA. Five androgen dependent tissues, in the castrate-peripubertal male rat, will be evaluated following administration of your chemical of choice. Potent reference androgen, as well as antiandrogen compounds are administered to standardize the assay.
